I usually just add air, as opposed to releasing most of the air and pumping. Could that cause more pressure build up in the pump, to skew the results?

To make matters more complicated, I pump using my ancient Silca Super Pista pump, whose gauge shows 110. When I check my pocket gauge, it shows 85 psi.
