I believe that blind bike lane advocacy, that is, advocacy of bike lanes for the sake of having bike lanes markings on as many roads as possible, is the cause of the poor planning and engineering design.

The local bike lane advocates did not demand quality bike lanes. They almost never demand quality. Rather, they demand volume.

There are three possible explanations for why the most vocal local bike lane proponents do not demand quality. One may be that they do not recognize the problems created by designs that conflict with proper destination positionng, provide insufficient clearance to parked car doors, and so forth because they do not understand defensive bicycle driving in particular and vehicular cycling in general. Another may be that they care more about marketing cycling to non-cyclists than they care about whatever problems are created by bad designs. Lastly, they may over-estimate the planners' and engineers' competence at designing quality bike lane facilities that are reasonably compliant with defensive bicycle driving and vehicular cycling. There was a time that I could be faulted for this last error. Not any more.
