Not a good method. And that's not an allen wrench...

I just put my hand near the seat tube and push back on the tire. If you want to check alignment, you should be able to fit your index finger in between the tire and the seat stay on either side of the tire. Now, like dsh said, it doesn't have to be too tight.

Tighten down one of the bolts and then do the other.
