I am also going to be taking to the inguinal hernia repair. My doc said to do it on my own schedule when the time is right. Looking at Early October so I can still finish most of the outdoor season here in Minnesota. After his recommended 6 week low activity recovery period I will hit the trainer 4-5 times per week and be ready again in the spring.

On a side note, after learning that I had a inguinal hernia I backed off the miles significantly for close to two weeks until I could get in to see the doctor for his evaluation. He gave me the green light to continue saying that maintaining my fitness would offset the risk of making it worse. After those two weeks I came back well rested and stronger than when I tapered off. I think next year I will take a week off again in August because of the benefits of rest and recovery. Prior to the off weeks I was at my peak, riding 150 -180 miles per week.

Nice to hear the view points of others who have dealt with this issue - Thanks
