I believe chain driven tricycles predate chain driven bicycles so all bicycles in general use today are hybrids combining elements of tricycles (chain drive) and elements of ordinary bicycles (two wheels). I read the first modern hybrid (as we know the term today, though the definition seems to be much disputed) was a Bianchi Advantage. I'm guessing around 86.
