There really is no other way. There is a lot of force used to force the crank onto the spindle (i'm assuming this is what we're talking about) and you need a lot of concentrated force at the spindle to remove it. I suppose you could clamp the bike down and use a rubber mallet or something to try and knock the crank arm off....but, for obvious reasons, this is not a good idea. I don't think it would even work truth be told.
