If you know what you need in terms of components and bike fit, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a bicycle from bikes direct. I've heard that they occasionally have problems with bike assembly (e.g. not greasing parts that need to be greased) and customer service, but as I said: we didn't notice any problems with the CX bike.
Wow, one bike and you're an expert. After dealing with several dozen of BD bike shaped objects, I can say they are mostly junk. The bottom brackets, headsets, and wheels are the worst on the market. I've seen spindles shear, rim joints split, bearings seize, and host of other problems within a few short days of use.
