I'm all for Lance's cause, but his entry fee for that event was just damn ridiculous.
I agree the fee is high but the number of people who wanted me to "sponsor" [aka = $upport/finance/subsidize] that entry fee reduces the "giving/selfless" part of the rider - IMO (you are welcome to yours) . BTW I didn't know I had that many friends and family. I received over 40 separate requests for LiveStrong.

You can make that into: "That is exactly why I don't ride in pacelines" or "That is exactly why I don't race" or "That is exactly why I don't ride 18 mph" or "That is exactly why I don't ride by myself", too- people have crashed doing all of them.
As for accidents/crashes, Philly had a LOT of them. (On this one location at least half-a-dozen people toppled over a guard rail that had stacked hay bales as an additional protective measure as buffering and they couldn't make the turn on a descent)
If you "added-up or compared" the number of injuries/mile ridden, I would say a LOT more accidents/mile on a charity ride compared to a RR, Group ride or even a Crit.
