I picked up a Trek yesterday off of a Craigslist posting for 25 dollars. After getting it home and doing some research I am having trouble IDing the bike or at least what its made of. I search the serial number and it came up with 1983 412 or late 1982 412. The 412 isn't in the 1983 brochure but the bike I have isnt the same as the 1982 412s. You can tell this by looking at the fork and the dropouts, which on my bike looks similar to the fork and dropouts used on Reynolds frames. The bike has been repainted some time ago it seems and the trek decal was masked but the tubing id decal was not.

It also has a nice miss mash of components.

Suntour derailleurs Blueline front and Cyclone rear (6000 series I believe)
SR Super custom crank, with one sugino mp crank arm (donno what thats all about)
weinmann 605 side pull brakes with shimano600 leavers
Shimano Dura-ace downtube shifters (not indexed ones)
fuji branded velo saddle with a seatpost of a marin (not sure what the deal with that one is either)
The front wheel is a nice 27in alloy but the rear wheel is a steel 26in with 5 speed cog that needs to be replaced along with the disastrous bars

alot of unoriginal parts and but most it seems are of mid to higher quality. I was hoping to clean it up and use it but its a tad too big for me (which is sad considering its a 21in frame, damn im short) so im still unsure what im going to do with it. How often do people look to trade smaller bikes for larger ones? I have a feeling with the painted frame and mismatched components It could be hard to get good offers for it. Any help is appreciated, I am fairly new with this stuff but enjoyable learning experience. Full Gallery
