Dawes frame rings like a bell
I'm still slowly--very slowly--plugging away at a restoration of an early-mid 60s Dawes Double Blue. Cleaned up the frame with an oxalic acid soak recently, it now looks very nice. There are some rough patches here and there where rust had bled through the paint and the usual scrapes but it looks great, I think.
Anyway, in Oldpedaller's opinion, ventured on an earlier thread, it's probably a full db Reynold's frame, although there's no trace of a tubing sticker that I can find. But I noticed something interesting the other day: people often talk about guessing what kind of tubing is used in a frame by flicking it with a finger and listening to the sound. It's not an exact science, obviously--like trying to tell when a watermelon is ripe by knocking on it with one's knuckles--but sort of fun anyway. In my limited experience, gaspipe frames seem to go "bonk" or "plunk," while your basic chromolly frame is more of a "ping."
The bare Dawes frame is now hanging on a nail (hooked through the rear dropout) in my back room. There's a Lotus frame from the 80s hanging next to it, made from Ishiwata EXO, I think. The Lotus frame goes "bing" when you flick it with a finger. The Dawes frame, on the other hand, gives a great resonant "Bonggggg," almost like a bell. Top tube, seat tube, down tube, even the seat stays--they all make a great (though differently pitched) bell-like sound that resonates for 14 to 15 seconds, as timed by my watch. I wish I knew how to add audio to this post, but I don't even have a digital camera of my own.
So there it is. I don't know if it's significant in any way or is something that others have noticed about other frames, but I kind of enjoy it. Must go and ring my frame again now.
