I rode a tt last year where I was DFL. I really enjoyed it even though I was passed by every other rider. I hadn't ridden in a TT since some time in the '80s. Being DFL almost beats being somewhere in the middle with little chance of improvement, which I was even in my best shape. The only TT I've ridden this year I passed my 2 minute man, which also has things to recommend it.
I was passed by my one minute man early on (he got top 3). Then with a few miles to go I turned around to see my
two minute man gaining on me. 'F this' I say to myself, 'I'm not letting this guy pass me' and in the end I finished 20 seconds up on him (his time of course was about 1:40 faster than mine). I chatted with him afterwards and we traded notes about how he used me for a carrot (he was trying hard to catch me) and I used him the same way (trying to avoid being caught). Worked for both of us : ).
And yes, I agree DFL>DNF>DNS. No doubt about that. And all are better than DNB (Did Not Bother).
