The frame is definitely early '80s, probably 1984 or earlier. Could possibly be late '70s.

Do you have the serial number? I'd like to look it up on Vintage Trek to see what it is supposed to be. First guess is, it does not look like a 56 cm Trek, rather a 52 cm Trek.
