frustrated with crits

So here is the story...
I was a mtb and road racer all through my teens and twenties, good too. In 2001 joined the army, raced amateur in Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Germany, and Poland in 03 and 04, in 2005 got hit in Afghanistan and lost my right leg. I still race, but even in the cat 5 get totally blown off the back. Went to the Vacaville grand prix this weekend in norcal and it was literally like the pack just took off without me.
I am looking for some drastic training changes. I can hold my own on road races as long as there are no big climbs (the issue is force, as my amputated side only has about 50% of the force my normal side does, and it is a matter of blood circulation leading to atrophy, so there is no cure, just maybe a work-around).
I love racing crits, even though road is somewhat of my best event. I am desperate, even willing to hire a coach. I got ahold of Carmichael's book about the time crunched cyclist (which I am, baby on the way, corporate management job).
Any suggestions as to the usefullness of Carmichael's book?
I am honestly having trouble dealing with being a former up and coming racer, then overnight begging to just at least being able to pass one two legged person in a race.
Any training ideas?
