I ride XC and I do have Hayes Nines which I am happy with, and if I upgrade I will likely go with Hayes Strokers.
There have been countless discussions here on hydro vs. mechs, so make your own conclusions. My own opinion is hydros FTW. Some say that hydros are high maintenance ie. fluid leaks, snagged/broken lines, difficult adjustment, etc.. As far I am concerned my hyrdos have been set-and-forget, no issues whatsoever other than pad replacement.
I'll also say that for me hydraulic disc brakes have been a quantum leap over V's.
The Hayes Nines were the other brand I was looking at. I found a new set on eBay for $120, so I might have to consider them.
