I've never seen a Shimano link in person, but after looking at the instructions, I would suspect the problem is not the link, but the confusion it causes for the people trying to install it. It looks like a mechanical puzzle.
I used Superlinks with Shimano chains for years, but these days I just take the easiest route and use SRAM chains which include the Powerlink/Powerlock.
