I wouldn't quite characterize Detroit as a ghost town. We still have 900K or about 6.5K per square mile. That's still a higher average density than many of our inner ring suburbs. Of course Detroit's density is not homogeneous and the less dense urban areas are becoming rural.
That said, we do have some ghost streets.

Hamtramck still has some of the highest density around -- more so than some of the areas surrounding it. The city is working on a city-wide bike network for cyclists, but especially for kids biking to school. (For those unfamiliar with Hamtramck, it's a city within Detroit that's probably the most ethnically-diverse community in Michigan.)
