I do not have any 1982 US literature, so I cannot provide a definitive answer as to the originality and position, however I can supply some facts and educted guesses.

The Cyclone MkII came out in 1981, so it was available and was being spec'd on the comparable 1982 Canadian market model, the Continental. Later versions of the Cresta were spec'd with the MounTech derailleurs but these were not available until 1983.

The triple crankset has been around for a very long time, but the Japanese did not fully grasp the concept of the grand touring bicycle and ultra-wide gearing until the very late 1970s. Again, the Canadian, 1982 Continental is spec'd with a Sugino Aero Tour TAT triple. FYI, this crankset was introduced in 1982 and established a new 74mm BCD, allowing chainrings as small as 24T.

In all liklihood, the above components are original. To gain more confidence, check the component date codes against the info on the component page of the Vintage-trek website. If they all date to late 1981 or 1982, they are almost certainly OEM.

As for position, I would say it is mid-range. Later, there was an more upscale grand touring model, the Seral, though again, I'm not sure about 1982. Still, the absence of cantilvers, suggest a mid-range model and the probability of there being a better grand touring model in the product line.

Later versions did come with a rear rack.

Please posy the serial number for my database.
