Bike trail vs hunting land
Three years ago we moved into a small, rural, insular community. I'm the only adult biker in the place. That's how people know me. Most people around here hunt. I ride an mtb in the public hunting areas but there have been no problems because I'm careful not to interfere with anyone's hunting and I stay away during peak hunting times like opening day, etc. I also do a little hunting myself.
In the last few months a group has emerged wanting to put in bike trails. My first thought was "hurray". Recently, folks who have grown up here and hunted all their lives have voiced opposition to any encroachment on their hunting lands by bike riders.
I actually belong to a local sportsman's club, and they were going to discuss what they could do to keep the bikers out. I skipped the meeting because truthfully, I'm all for the trails and hunting is low on my list of priorities. Actually, the people who want to put in the trails don't want to interfere with the hunters, but the hunters don't see it that way.
I am very much the minority in this issue. Few folks who live here currently ride bikes. I believe that one reason the group is wanting the trails is to hook up with existing trails in adjacent counties, and hopefully bring in some tourism and economic development.
I have decided, at least for the time being, to lay low and not get involved in the issue, even though I have been contacted by the group who wants the trails. I'm about the only local bike rider they can tap on this issue, but I don't want to make myself a focal point for those not wanting the trail.
Any thoughts?
