I think that there is some positive correlation between the two ... sport and utility cycling. But if people live in an area where it makes sense to bicycle for errands or casual diddying, they will.
Diddying, ah yes. I remember it well. We were on a boondoggling expedition in Southern Africanistan. We lost our corkscrew and were compelled to live on nothing but food and water for three days.
