Take location into account. In the farming community through which I was riding (Woodstock, CT), almost every family owns a pick up; and I've encountered hostility from people driving pick ups before, but they never looked like this one. Am I wrong to think that more often than not someone randomly and openly hostile towards a cyclist is going to be either dumb, reckless kids, or some sort of drunk/lowlife sleaze, neither of which are likely to be able to afford such a vehicle? Not that it's impossible, clearly my experience illustrates that it isn't, but speaking in probabilities, not nearly as likely.
