Bikes: two wheeled ones

My Component Weight Rant

Alright, I'm a weight weenie, I admit it. It's about the only objective measure of a bike, so I tend to worry about it.

I know it doesn't matter that much, but it's still fun building up a light bike.

That being said, I'm tired of manufacturers just straight up lying about their weights. Many manufacturers are good; SRAM for example. All of my SRAM components come in within a couple % (often below) their stated weights. Pedal Force is within a couple %, good job.

Now, someone I'm not so happy with; Deda Elementi. They just straight up lie about their weights. Many companies get creative and weigh wheels without stickers, or frames without paint, or forks with cut steerers and no paint, etc.

But Deda just plain lies, I'm convinced of it. Their weights have absolutely no basis in reality. If you head over to Weight Weenies listings, you'll see that many of their products are 20% overweight. These aren't bad samples, they're averages of submitted weights.

What drove me to post this is the Deda Newton Anatomic bars I got today. Listed at 205g for a 44cm. Mine are 44cm, and come in at 261.5g.

That's edging up on 30% overweight. Seriously, how do you manage that? Exactly what did you weigh to get your 205g number? Did you cut off the drops?

I'm sure they're gonna be great bars, and really stiff, and all that. But come on, you have a great product at a good price, there's no need to lie about your weights. It's just ridiculous.

There needs to be some sort of responsibility among manufacturers to post realistic weights.
