Since the local reality of such roads is that they don't get swept often enough and the stripes if added are usually continued curbside up to intersections, on downhills, and into door zones, and because drivers harass me when I leave the bike lane, I prefer streets of this width to not be striped with bike lanes, and be left with an 18' travel lane. Local bike maps highlight such roads as preferred routes regardless of striping.
Speaking of the way BL stripes are laid out... recently while doing a driving tour of the west (see John, I do understand the benefits of using a car) I happened to notice the huge difference between BL in different states... it is as if the MUTCD didn't exist at all. (not that those BL definitions are all that great)
