San Francisco did a study on sharrows (
http://www.sfmta.com/cms/uploadedfil...ort-052404.pdf) and it seems the main benefit is that it gets bikes further away from the parked cars and also increased the space cars gave bikes when passing them. The sharrows are not located in the middle of the lane, but just outside the door zone.
And according to the UK report bike lanes do the opposite. Motorists give cyclists less space.
