To OP, I think the mistake you made was engaging. It can be a delicate situation when a boss starts getting in your business, but it kind of sounds like you maybe made the mistake of trying to convince her that what you were doing was ok. That's the same as holding up a sign saying, "Let the debate begin." The best thing to do, when a boss or anyone else starts getting in your business, is to politely but firmly disengage.
