Would like your thoughts on Cycling in Chiang Mai, Thailand- Shanghai, China China, L

Currently residing in Chiang Mai, I have decided in the last couple of days to cycle to Shanghai.

I would really appreciate your thoughts as there are some experienced cyclists on here and I think your opinions will be valuable.

I have looked at some maps and this route suggested itself.

1. Chiang Mai to cross into Laos at Chaing Khong-Houay Xai
2. Unsure where I can/should cross from Laos into China, still doing some research there.
3. Generally following the coast all the way round east to Shanghai once in China. Following the borders of Laos and Vietnam until I hit the coast.

As I said I have only just decided this so please tell me if there is something I need to be looking out for in my preparation.

Does anyone know if I have will have any problems taking my bike into china over the border?

I do not think I will be going self-sustained, so I would like to mostly pay for accommodation and buy food as much as I can. This is also open to debate though )
