Don't worry about a "beginner" set of shoes/pedals, it's not something you graduate from one system to another. I started on Sidi Genius and Look Deltas (Keos weren't out yet), and that's where I am today. Great system, great shoes.

At the very least I recommend a road pedal. the platform is larger and less prone to hot spots. As to the single-sided/dual-sided debate, you will learn and adapt to what you have, so I wouldn't make that a deal breaker...
