My life experience has led me to strongly believe "a". But "a" will never become the prevailing belief if we continue to insist on "b".
I was actually just thinking about a very closely related phenomenon the other day: my sister's simultaneous claims that
a) There are no statistically-significant mental differences between men and women
and
b) Women are better in management positions because of more long-term thinking and more inclusive tendencies
Which is it?
