During the early 70s bike boom the traditional bike parts manufacturers could not keep up with demand so builders started sourcing parts from all available sources, including Japan. That was the period when Shimano and Suntour started selling internationally per my understanding. Also why the same model in the same year could be found with different components sometimes. They used what they could get.
