Sigh. If I'm shot because I was foolish enough to wander through a highrisk area I'd be just as dead as if I was shot because I was a woman or gay or, for God's sake and heaven help me, a Republican. The thought process involved in the mind of the perp seems a bit irrelevant at that point. I think this "hate crime" business has nothing to do with justice and everything to do with grievance politics.
I guess where the grey area comes in may be summarized as follows: people who dress like a hooker should not be shocked if they are treated like one. Use a dominatrix as an avatar and don't be shocked when someone makes a sexist remark.
I think we all agree that **** is a very very bad thing.
