beatifik comes in for the win! Some folks simply prefer the feel of grips over tape and there's nothing wrong with that (I know I do).

I prefer grips to tape simply because tape is too easily damaged especially when locking the bike up a lot. One little scrape in the tape and it deteriorates quickly into a full on unravelled mess.
Right now I'm using shellac'd cotton tape on my priest bars and it's a happy medium for me. I might try these weird rubber grips for winter riding because I fear that the shellac'd tape may be a bit slippery with gloves.
