Weather Forecast this morning was for 73 and Thunderstorms, 40% chance of rain.
We're doing Six Gap on the tandem this year. I've done Six Gap several times, and we did all 6 climbs (but not the official event) on the Tandem last year.
Couple of points: For the other Floridians realize that a High of 73, does not mean it will be 73 for most of the ride. In the Mountains (unlike in Fl) its substantially colder in morning than it is at Noon. So even if the weather stays as forecast, be prepared for low 50's or even high 40's at the start of the ride.
A base layer is a really good idea for this type ride. You get hot uphill, and cold on the descents, a good base layer helps manage this.
I'll likely wear a base layer, short sleeves, arm warmers, and a vest, but I'm bringing all that, plus leg warmers, goretex jacket, and shoe covers. Likely overkill but I've frozen up there before and its better to have it in the car and not use it, than not have it and need it.
As for gearing, Hogpen is the only truely steep climb, and only one relatively short section is really steep. I've done six gap with 39/27, and that was fine for me on all but that one section which was a bit of a grind. 34/27 and you can spin more up the steep part.
Be careful on the descents. In Florida you don't get to practice descending much. Last year someone died coming down Hogpen, so it's smart to take it easy there.
