i'd recommend something inexpensive, sturdy, and service-able until you get a season or so of racing under your belt, that way you'll know if you want to continue racing as it's a demanding hobby. then when you decided you're hooked on racing, think about wheels. but, always ride stuff that you can afford to replace.
fwiw, you still see Ks everywhere, easton/velomax orions or whatever the latest naming schematics are, and zipp 404s are certainly all over the place. all serve many racers well.
