Finally Went Clipless
After riding the platform pedals that came on my 7.5 FX for most of a year, the urge to go clipless finally became irresistible. We like to get off the bikes and enjoy the surroundings which makes "walkability" an issue, so I went with MTB pedals (Shimano PD-M520) and shoes (Shimano SH-MT21).
I installed the pedals, loosened the adjustments all the way, installed the cleats on the shoes, practiced clipping in & out a few times and we went riding at Arabia Mountain (East metro-Atlanta) which is a moderately hilly MUP.
It really is possible to "pedal in a circle" and there is considerably more short term power available. We were finishing the 17 mile ride and I was feeling smug about not joining Club Tombay when my wife abruptly stopped without warning in front of me. I managed to get stopped without hitting her, but wound up laying on the ground (still clipped in) while 4-5 spectators expressed concern for my well being (and probably wondered about my riding skills and sanity). Oh well, no harm except for the embarrassment and that was probably inevitable.
I definitely like the clipless pedals, but it seems that old dogs (63) really do learn slowly.
