CotterPins why do you hate me!

I have been working on an old Sekine 10 speed that was given to me. The cranks required new cotter pins. So i knock the old ones out.

Now my issue is with pressing new ones in.

Does anyone have a how-to or some sort of guide for fitting cotter pins in? I keep mashing the new pins and they get all deformed and then I am back to square one. Even if i dont try to mash them, they seem to un tighten and get deformed just from pedaling around the block.

what is the trick?! Also I have inspected the spindle and it seems fine. Still has straight edges and does appear deformed at all.

I have looked at sheldon's website but I need pictures or something
