I agree. The set up looks great, but you may have a tough time getting the tension right. You could keep playing around with slightly different gear ratios until you hit the magic one, but it's a bit of a hack.
The bike could be a great looking single speed with a tensioner (could also use a used derailer).
Things that don't fit usually end with getting pissed off. I'd worry about that first and chain tension later.
