I use a Paramo multiactivity jacket all winter from Oct to early May. It is way better than any Gortex-like fabric, is good for the heaviest of rainfall for extended periods and dries within 15mins. It acts as both my waterproof and windproof.
I am into my 6th year of use. Paramo replaced the zip last summer and put in a new liner and it looks as good as new.
The downsides are that it is too warm for summer and too bulky to pack away, I can stuff it into my pannier but its cool enough to wear the whole time in winter.
