Not-Quite-Winter Shoes

As winter approaches, I'm starting to think about how my feet will feel.

Living in the Pacific Northwest, I have a different experience of winter than many of you. The average winter days here will have lows in the mid- to upper-30's, but there will be at least a 50% chance of rain every day.

Last year, I just pulled a set of Sugoi resistors over my Pearl Izumi Quest MTB shoes. That worked pretty well, but shoe covers tend not to be as durable as shoes, so I'd like to find a shoe that provides its own warmth and, ideally, rain protection.

Because we don't have real winter here, I'm concerned that full-blown winter shoes/boots would be too warm. On the other hand, since my current shoes have nothing more than mesh on top, any mention of ventilation gives me pause.

I'd like to keep the price as much under $100 as I can. I need something SPD-compatible.

Any suggestions?
