Poorly maintained coaster brake bikes? Yeah, you might need a new chain every couple of years, but that's it. You can't compare the maintenance of these to bikes with hand brakes, which need regular adjustment and pad replacement.
My house is on a corner, and the front yard isn't fenced in, so kids often take a short cut across my yard (biking or walking) when they go around that corner. Last fall I found a bicycle brake pad lying in the yard, and the nut that was supposed to hold it on was a few feet away. I've wondered several times about the kid who lost it and what happened the next time he tried to stop.
