Did you get the names of the owners? They're responsible for all the damages (bike, helmet, you), and file a police report too. This is why I carry pepper spray; I get ten shots, I figure 4 to get the dog away, and then have some left over if the owner gets belligerent. I take no chances; it's my life and I choose to use force.

Anyone who has time to pull out pepper spray has time to avoid crashing into animals. Anyone who crashes because they rode one handed in a difficult riding situation while trying to pull out spray, a gun, or whatever, is an idiot.
