Powder coat is extremely durable. I just had to chip some away on my motorcycle to repair a broken weld.

The best paint job without a sprayer is probably one part marine polyurethane. Use a quality brush and brush strokes will dissapear. The paint (and decent brush) are not inexpensive however.
