That is what I did with my two youngsters. Their first geared bike had a 5 speed indexed freewheel in the back with 20" wheels. IIRC it was a GT. It also came with the derailleur guard on it, never had a problem with it. The next bike up the line was an 18 speed MTB with 24" wheels, I believe it was a GT also. Then they moved up to a 15" frame MTB with 26" wheels, then it was time for them start buying their own bikes. (not really! dear old dad is a pushover...I am building up a city bike for my 25 year old son this winter.)
