Brakes for Miyata 610. Closely spaced canti mounts...

I'm in the process of overhauling a 1984 Miyata 610. The original brakes needed new springs, straddle wires and pads, so I decided to replace the entire brake. I purchased a pair of Shimano BR-R550 cantilevers and installed them yesterday. It seems that the cantilever mounts are too closely spaced for these brakes to work properly. I put the narrow spacers on the pad side of the mount and adjusted the spring tension properly. The back brake springs catch about 1mm before the pads hit the rim and the front never catch at all. Am I doing something wrong or won't these brakes work for my bike? Are there other reasonably priced brakes that will work with the narrow mounts?
