Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

Did you buy these hubs new or used? If used, i expect the previous owner tried to overhaul them and did it incorrectly. I have never seen ANY Shimano hub with bearing retainers from Dura Ace down to department store stuff.
