My Trek 2500 was 16 years old when it finally became unridable. The downtube came unglued from the aluminum bottom bracket assembly. And that bike was from 1988 - the technology has gotten much better since then. So I guess the only real answer to the question is to wait 20 years and see.
PS - not many current consumer products are designed to last 20 years anyhow.
Doh - that reminds me. There's a guy at work who often parks in the rack next to me who rides a 2500 (that he bought used) to work (and on some longer rec rides).
