As mentioned in my earlier comments, sometimes you can't predict you are going to need to stop. I rarely need to go into a store ... maybe if I'm bonking, or have a medical need.
That's why a Boy Scout, or a Road Cyclist with common sense carries a lock and is prepared for the "unlikely event" that he might have to stop somewhere on an 80 mile ride.
