That's my only guess. Unless there's some adjustment thing that works better when you have -1 ball in there. That's what I was sort of hoping to hear, but I think I'll only learn that if I call Shimano. What's odd is that there was one missing out of both the front and rear hubs.

Yeah, not sure about that part. If you count them in the tech doc, there are 13 on the drive side, and I pulled 13 out of the drive side of mine. Either the race is bigger on that side(I didn't measure) or that's how many fit sans bearing retainer.

Dammit Shimano...

Oh well. I put them back together with full bearing retainers and everything seems fine. If they blow up down the road, I'll post it here!

And yes, I put all new bearings in from the same lot.
