You can ride a bike while bold or while old but you dont find many old bold cyclists.. I would never try to pass a moving vehicle anywhere near an intersection and as a rule only pass on the right while traffic is stopped very gingerly.

Its ashame this women had to die just trying to pass a truck. My condolances to the women and her family.
