And converting thousands of miles of two lane roads with shoulders to narrow 4 lane roads with with no extra width for cyclists and trees removed along side for a "safe" overrun area that "condemn" at lest 3 billion acres (by your calculation) of peoples' yards is a better thing?
The issue is the roadscape is changing with no thought for all road users, with no thought to reducing fatalities, the primary goal is to increase capacity, increase speed and reduce delays (due to turning movements.) These designs reinforce that bikes do not belong on the roadway as much if not more so then bike lanes. IMHO those that want to maintain the status quo are the furthest off base then the others.
