Side visibility really isn't that big of an issue as far as I'm concerned. If I was worried about it, I would get some monkeylectric or a down low glow. There are other POV lights similar to the monkeylectric. There are also spoke lights. Spoke reflectors are actually fairly effective. Lots of good options before you get away from bicycle specific lighting.
