Provided you don't get any tickets or have to pay for parking, the costs would be, as you point out, similar to transit. But driving and transit just aren't as healthy or fun as bicycling and once you have paid off the bike (equating it to the cost of transit or a car) you are MAKING money. Our transit pass here is $98.00 a month so I figure I need to ride for about 13 months to pay-off my newest bike: after that, I am saving that hundred bucks a month. For my other three bikes, I only had to ride 6-7 months to have them covered.
